Laser Rangers This Saturday: "More Alfred Hitchcock Classics"

Saturday's (1/8/2011) Laser Rangers session will begin at 4:45 PM, and the entire
program, including shorts, will be more masterpieces of suspense directed by
Alfred Hitchcock.

Our food theme for Saturday's session: Mexican. (Please bring appropriate
dishes.) Freshly popped theatre-style popcorn will also be available, as
usual.

Please note that road access issues around our venue continue and will
until road reconstruction is finished sometime in late spring. So when
existing I-435(W) at Parallel, go west to 115th Street (*not 123rd street*) and
then turn right (north). Drive to Hollingsworth, and then turn left (west).
From there, go to our usual venue: 12325 Pinehurst Drive in Kansas City, KS.
(Phone: 913-721-2106 for further info, if needed.)

Our first short, directed by Hitchcock, is a quintessential episode from
his "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV series: "Bang! You're Dead" (1961)
starring a very young, red-headed, and freckle-faced Billy Mumy, in one of the
series best-remembered episodes. (Young Mumy finds a loaded pistol, and
thinking its a promised toy from his visiting uncle, he begins to play a
favorite game 'Bang! You're Dead'.)

Our First Classic Feature:

"Rear Window" (1954), 112 minutes, starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly,
Raymond Burr, and Thelma Ritter.

Professional photographer L. B. "Jeff" Jeffries (Stewart) fractures his
leg while getting an action shot at an auto race. Confined to his New York
apartment in a whole leg cast, he spends his time looking out of his rear
picture window observing his neighbors' activities with his telephoto lens.
Soon he begins to suspect that a neighbor across the courtyard may have
murdered his wife. Jeff enlists the help of his High Society fashion-consultant
girlfriend Lisa Freemont (Kelly) and his visiting nurse Stella (Ritter) to
investigate his suspicions.

Dinner Break (lasts an hour or so)

Our second short following dinner is the sterling *black comedy* "Lamb to
the Slaughter" directed by Hitchcock and again from his "Alfred Hitchcock
Presents" TV series (1961 season). This became one of the most infamous
episodes of the entire series' run: When perfect housewife Mary Maloney murders
her philandering Police Chief husband when he suddenly announces he's
leaving her for another woman, she immediately calls his precinct to report his
death. She then hatches a plan that will allow her to get away with the
perfect crime and make the investigating detectives accomplices to her
husband's murder!

Our second classic feature:

"Vertigo" (1958), 129 minutes, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and
Barbara Bel Geddes.

John "Scottie" Ferguson (Stewart) is a retired San Francisco police
detective that was forced to retire after developing severe acrophobia (fear of
heights) on his last case. A wealthy shipbuilder, who is an acquaintance
from his college days, approaches Scottie and asks him to follow his beautiful
wife, Madeleine (Novak). He fears she is slowly going insane, maybe even
contemplating suicide, because she believes she has become possessed by a
dead ancestor. Scottie is highly skeptical, but agrees to take the case when
he meets the stunning Madeleine. But Scottie soon falls under Madeleine's
spell, even after she begins to lead him to very high places!

See everyone Saturday!
