By any lights, order now, for the October SF&F Literati!

October 23, 2017 will be here sooner than you think!
The SF&F Literati just met to discuss The Outsourcerer's Apprentice. They meet at 7:00 p.m. every fourth Monday (with a couple of exceptions), on the second floor of the Oak Park Barnes & Noble Booksellers. If you'd like to see discussion notes from the evening, check the group's Facebook Page.

You have a month: NOW's the time to order or reserve your copy of Lightless, by C.A. Higgins.

What's it about?
Here's the publisher's overview:

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BUZZFEED AND KIRKUS REVIEWS

With deeply moving human drama, nail-biting suspense—and bold speculation informed by a degree in physics—C. A. Higgins spins a riveting science fiction debut guaranteed to catapult readers beyond their expectations.

Serving aboard the Ananke, an experimental military spacecraft launched by the ruthless organization that rules Earth and its solar system, computer scientist Althea has established an intense emotional bond—not with any of her crewmates, but with the ship’s electronic systems, which speak more deeply to her analytical mind than human feelings do. But when a pair of fugitive terrorists gain access to the Ananke, Althea must draw upon her heart and soul for the strength to defend her beloved ship.

While one of the saboteurs remains at large somewhere on board, his captured partner—the enigmatic Ivan—may prove to be more dangerous. The perversely fascinating criminal whose silver tongue is his most effective weapon has long evaded the authorities’ most relentless surveillance—and kept the truth about his methods and motives well hidden.

As the ship’s systems begin to malfunction and the claustrophobic atmosphere is increasingly poisoned by distrust and suspicion, it falls to Althea to penetrate the prisoner’s layers of intrigue and deception before all is lost. But when the true nature of Ivan’s mission is exposed, it will change Althea forever—if it doesn’t kill her first.

About a week left! Do you have your copy?

Time flies. Don't miss the SF&F Literati!
Monday, September 25, 2017The Outsorcerer's Apprentice, by Tom Holt
7:00 p.m., on the 2nd floor of the Oak Park Barnes & Nobles11323 W. 95th Street, Overland Park, KS 66214

Do you have your copy yet?
The Outsorcerer's Apprentice, by Tom Holt

A happy workforce, it is said, is a productive workforce.

Mmmm.

Try telling that to an army of belligerent goblins. Or the Big Bad Wolf. Or a professional dragons layer. Who is looking after their well-being? Who gives a damn about their intolerable working conditions, lack of adequate health insurance, and terrible coffee in the canteen?

Thankfully, with access to an astonishingly diverse workforce and limitless natural resources, maximizing revenue and improving operating profit has never really been an issue for the one they call "the Wizard." Until now.

Because now a perfectly good business model -- based on sound fiscal planning, entrepreneurial flair, and only one or two of the infinite parallel worlds that make up our universe -- is about to be disrupted by a young man not entirely aware of what's going on.

There's also a slight risk that the fabric of reality will be torn to shreds. You really do have to be awfully careful with these things.

Christine Taylor-Butler headlines September KaCSFFS Meeting

What: Monthly KaCSFFS Meeting
When: Saturday, September 16, 2017, 7:00 p.m. (setup starts at 6:00)
Where: The Writers Place, 3607 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111
Food Theme: Good Things to Munch (or Sip) While You Read

A Reading by Christine Taylor-Butler
We in KaCSFFS are really spoiled. We live in a place where a lot of really talented writers in our field have come to live. One of them is author Christine Taylor-Butler, a self-proclaimed reading addict who has 65 commercially produced books and counting.

Her current labor of love (which is gaining considerable critical acclaim) is The Lost Tribes Series, a middle-grades science fiction adventure series that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

First book in the series.
She has agreed to do a reading of one of her works at the September meeting. Her reading will be held in the second-floor library at the Writers' Place so everyone who wants to hear her can easily do so, while others socialize downstairs.

What do you like to eat or drink while reading? And whose novels do you like to read?
While remembering we have an open meeting where minors are welcome, we urge you to share any favorite (G-rated) goodies you may enjoy snacking upon, while reading. Please pair it with a description, photo, or one-liner about where is your favorite place to read, and if appropriate, please tell us when is your favorite reading-time.

TLT Book Two.
We know you have favorites. You wouldn't be a KaXFAN if you didn't love reading. Whose fiction gets your juices flowing or inspires your imagination? We'll have a place where you can share a list of your favorite books and authors, too. We'll publish the list in a future blog post. If you can't make the meeting--or even if you can--please feel free to post a comment that shares some of your reading favorites! KaCSFFS is all about sharing our love of reading.
