KaCSFFS will move to Google from Yahoo

Stand by for the move to Google Groups!
A quorum of current members showed up at the May KaCSFFS meeting to consider, discuss, and vote on the question of whether to migrate our main organizational information from the KAXFEN group on Yahoo Groups a new list on Google Groups.

Ultimately, the vote was overwhelmingly in favor. The changeover will happen after we've had a chance to get an orientation about how the listserv works.

Here is a video on the various functions of Google Groups:

Come to the June meeting, June 21, 2014, for a complete orientation presentation!

SF&F Literati Meet THIS MONDAY

The May SF&F Literati meeting is a week early: May 19, 2014
Book of the Evening: Sweet Silver Blues
Author: Glen Cook, our ConQuesT Author Guest of Honor!
Where: Oak Park Barnes & Noble Booksellers #2352,  11323 W 95th Street, Overland Park, KS 66214
2nd Floor, by the front windows.
When: 7:00 p.m., May 19, 2014

Overview from Barnes & Noble:
It should have been a simple job. But for Garrett, a human detective in a world of gnomes, tracking down the woman to whom his dead pal Danny left a fortune in silver is no slight task. Even with the aid of Morley, the toughest half-elf around, Garrett isn't sure he'll make it out alive from a land where magic can be murder, the dead still talk, and vampires are always hungry for human blood.

Glen Cook is an enduring and popular writer with a large list of titles in print.  His Garrett, P.I. series has been a fan favorite since this book kicked off the series.

Read an interesting interview our own Bryan Thomas Schmidt conducted with him, here

Next Month's Book:
It's not too early to begin reading next month's book, The Eidolon, by Libby McGugan.

This meeting will be on the fourth Monday, June 23, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at the Oak Park Barnes & Noble.

Overview from Barnes & Noble:
A contemporary SF thriller. The divide between science and the human spirit is the setting for a battle for the future.
When physicist Robert Strong loses his job at the Dark Matter research lab and his relationship falls apart, he returns home to Scotland. Then the dead start appearing to him, and Robert begins to question his own sanity. Victor Amos, an enigmatic businessman, arrives and recruits Robert to sabotage CERN’S Large Hadron Collider, convincing him the next step in the collider’s research will bring about disaster. Everything Robert once understood about reality, and the boundaries between life and death, is about to change forever. And the biggest change will be to Robert himself... Mixing science, philosophy and espionage, Libby McGugan’s stunning debut is a thriller like no other.

KC Horror Book Club May 2014 Meeting

DOUBLE FEATURE!

High Octane Damnation & Burden Kansas

By Brett Williams & Alan Ryker (respectively)

Details:
Date and Time: May 11, 2013 (Sunday) from noon to 1:30.
Location: The Green Room Burgers and Beer
Address: 4010 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite D, Kansas City, MO.
Event Notes:

High Octane Damnation
By Brett Williams

"Comet Press publishes horror, suspense, and dark crime, so I was thrilled when they wanted to publish High Octane Damnation, especially since they appear to be gunning for the growing niche of hardcore horror/dark crime. High Octane Damnation certainly fits the bill, with its intense chase scenes, gut-wrenching violence, and diabolical revenge sequences. Of course no work of fiction that pays tribute to the grindhouse car flicks I grew up watching as a kid would be complete without the prerequisite sexy women thrown in for good measure. All of which adds up to a fun novella I’m sure readers will enjoy.

"If the gritty cover art revs your engine (great job, Comet Press!), them I’m sure you’ll want to uncap a cold beer and climb into the passenger seat with me, ’cause all hell is about to break loose on the road to High Octane Damnation."
-Brett Williams from his blog.

Burden Kansas
By Alan Ryker
Vampires are not sexy or sensitive. Hungry, bloody and stinking of the grave, they hunt the dry Kansas plains, taking what they want until they cross rancher Keith Harris. Keith is a damaged man who's always made the hard decisions others couldn't. As the two forces battle for survival, the lines between man and monster begin to blur. How much of a community's burden of sin can one man take on before becoming a monster himself? With Burden Kansas, Alan Ryker provides a contemporary novella of vampire horror written in the minimal voice of the western. Burden Kansas is more entertaining, disturbing and thought-provoking than you thought a vampire western could be.
-Sucker Punch Press.

New Officers Elected!

The KaCSFFS Public has Spoken
Logo designed by Ken Keller.
Three new officers were elected to the KaCSFFS Board of Directors at the April 2014 meeting, held April 19, 2014.

ConQuesT Chair for 2015
Kristina Hiner is still on the Board, but in a new position: she moves from Secretary to 2015 ConQuesT Convention Chair. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the 2014 ConQuesT.

Communications Officer
Jan S. Gephardt remains Communications Officer.

Earline "Cricket" Beebe
Treasurer
Our new Treasurer is Earline "Cricket" Beebe. She is a previous KaCSFFS Director, but not (as erroneously reported in the April 18 2014 blog post) a past treasurer. She has a professional background in accounting and tax analysis. She also has a long history
in fandom.  She has been president of the KC Horror Club, as well as KaCSFFS.

Keri O'Brien
Secretary
Keri O'Brien is our new secretary.  She is a talented graphic designer who won the recent ConQuesT Logo Contest, and has been active on the ConQuesT Convention Committee for several years, as well as the Kansas City in 2016 Worldcon bid.

Ken Keller
President
Not for the first time, KaCSFFS can look forward to a new year with Ken Keller at our helm.  This is Ken's fourth time as Director/President of KaCSFFS.  He also was one of its founders, and was the chairperson of the 1976 Midamericon Worldcon in Kansas City. Ken has been a fixture in SF fandom for decades.  He also is a graphic designer, publisher, and connoisseur of fannish collectibles.

IMAGE CREDITS: Many thanks to Keith Stokes's Midamericon Fan Photo Archive for the images of Earline (at Lonstarcon, the Texas Worldcon) and Ken (at the 2007 ConQuesT). The image of Keri is her Facebook profile photo.  Thanks, Keri!

Three Contested Elections April 19!

Don't Miss the April Meeting!
What: Annual KaCSFFS Officer Elections Meeting
Where: The Writers Place,
3607 Pennsylvania Ave., Kansas City, MO 64111
When: April 19, 2014
Board of Directors Meeting: 5:30 p.m. (open to all members)
Monthly Business Meeting: 7:00 p.m.

It's been a while since we had this many contested elections! Unfortunately, the Communications Officer was moving a household from California to Texas and Kansas City when she otherwise would have been posting an Absentee Ballot, and I apologize!

Thus, the ONLY way to vote is to come in person, and be a dues-paid member!

You still may pay for your membership in person at the meeting, or you may purchase your membership online, using the button at right.  Current President Ty Gephardt will be there with pre-printed membership cards for those who have already paid their membership fees in time to get on the Treasurer's list. He also will have blank cards to fill out, and the laminating machine at the meeting.

And the Nominees Are . . .
For President of KaCSFFS, April 2014-April 2015:
Ty Gephardt*, incumbent since 2013
Ken Keller, challenger (founder and previously a Director [when it was called that])

For Secretary of KaCSFFS, April 2014-April 2015:
Ty Gephardt*
Keri O'Brien
*Please note the Bylaws specifically prohibit a person from holding more than one office on the Board of Directors at the same time.  If Ty is elected to one office, he must remove himself from the race for the other office.

For Treasurer of KaCSFFS, April 2014-April 2015:
Cindy Norton, incumbent since 2009
Earline "Cricket" Beebe, (also previously a Treasurer)

Two other nominees are running unopposed:
For Communications Officer of KaCSFFS, April 2014-April 2015:
Jan S. Gephardt, incumbent since 2011
For Chairperson of ConQuesT 46 (the 2015 convention), to serve on the Board of Directors April 2014-April 2015:
Kristina Hiner, currently vice-chair of the 2014 convention.

Members, the fate of KaCSFFS is in your hands!
Come vote on Saturday!

KC Horror Book Club April 2014 Meeting

The Terror

By Dan Simmons

Details:
Date and Time: April 13, 2013 (Sunday) from noon to 1:30.
Location: The Green Room Burgers and Beer
Address: 4010 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite D, Kansas City, MO.
Event Notes:

Come and discuss The Terror and grab some food too.

The men on board HMS Terror have every expectation of triumph. As part of the 1845 Franklin Expedition, the first steam-powered vessels ever to search for the legendary Northwest Passage, they are as scientifically supported an enterprise as has ever set forth. As they enter a second summer in the Arctic Circle without a thaw, though, they are stranded in a nightmarish landscape of encroaching ice and darkness. Endlessly cold, with diminishing rations, 126 men fight to survive with poisonous food, a dwindling supply of coal, and ships buckling in the grip of crushing ice. But their real enemy is far more terrifying. There is something out there in the frigid darkness: an unseen predator stalking their ship, a monstrous terror constantly clawing to get in.When the expedition's leader, Sir John Franklin, meets a terrible death, Captain Francis Crozier takes command and leads his surviving crewmen on a last, desperate attempt to flee south across the ice. With them travels an Inuit woman who cannot speak and who may be the key to survival, or the harbinger of their deaths. But as another winter approaches, as scurvy and starvation grow more terrible, and as the terror on the ice stalks them southward, Crozier and his men begin to fear that there is no escape. The Terror swells with the heart-stopping suspense and heroic adventure that have won Dan Simmons praise as "a writer who not only makes big promises but keeps them" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). With a haunting and constantly surprising story based on actual historical events, The Terror is a novel that will chill you to your core.
