Don't miss the APRIL 30 DEADLINE! (that's this Sunday)!

ConQuesT 48 is coming sooner than you think--your chance to register online before the convention ends April 30, 2017!

What's so great about ConQuesT? Well, we must be doing something right, to have put on 47 of them previously . . . but let's look at the offerings. We have four headliner guests (more about them below), lots of other professional artists, writers, and others, plus multiple programming track and special events run by experienced fans who know how to keep it fun and smooth for everyone.

Our Guests of Honor
Robert J. Sawyer and Hominids-inspired friend
Robert J. Sawyer - Author GoH
Toronto-based Robert J. Sawyer has won the best-novel Hugo Award (for Hominids), and has twelve other Hugo nominations to his credit. He’s also won the best-novel Nebula Award (for The Terminal Experiment), the John W. Campbell Memorial Award (for Mindscan), plus numerous other awards around the world.

In 2016 he was named to the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Canadian government. His 23 novels include  the #1 Locus bestsellers Calculating God, Triggers, and the May KC SF&F Literati selection, Quantum Night. The ABC TV series FlashForward was based on his novel of the same name, and he was one of the scriptwriters for that series.

Jonathan Maberry in his natural habitat
Jonathan Maberry - Toastmaster
Jonathan Maberry is a New York Times best-selling novelist, five-time Bram Stoker Award winner, and comic book writer. He writes the Joe Ledger thrillers, the Rot & Ruin series, the Nightsiders series, the Dead of Night series, as well as standalone novels in multiple genres. He's also edited many anthologies, including The X-Files, Scary Out There, Out Of Tune, and V-Wars.

He is the founder of the Writers Coffeehouse, and the co-founder of The Liars Club. He was a featured expert on the History Channel documentary,  Zombies:  A Living History, and a regular expert on the TV series True Monsters. He is one third of the very popular and mildly weird Three Guys With Beards pop-culture podcast. Jonathan lives in Del Mar, California, with his wife, Sara Jo.

Rachael Mayo - Artist GoH
Rachael Mayo is a fantasy and SF artist who prefers traditional art media. She specializes in mixed media (this can include watercolor, colored pencil, paint pens, ink, acrylic, and shiny objects). She likes to create creatures with eye-searingly bright color schemes.

Rachael mostly takes private commissions or works on personal projects. She occasionally creates book covers or interior illustrations, primarily with small press publishers. She also has published Dragon Adventurea coloring book of her art, and sells her work to the public at science-fiction/fantasy convention art shows around the country. She earned a bachelor’s degree in illustration from University of Central Missouri in 1999, but by day she works as a systems administrator who enjoys tormenting unsuspecting mainframes. She spends most hours outside of her day job producing art. She lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Zac Zacarola - Fan GoH
Zac Zacarola and a wall of Ziggy's West swords.
A familiar face in the convention dealer’s room at the Ziggy’s West table, Zac first took interest in science fiction when he discovered “all those B movies” as a kid. His favorite is still the original The Day the Earth Stood Still. “Then, Star Trek came along,” he said. While studying chemistry at West Virginia University, he associated with Monongamoot, WVU’s SciFi club, met Jo, who was involved with MonCon III, and “thanks to her, I’ve attended a number of SciFi conventions which I may not have otherwise attended, including four WorldCons.”

For more than 35 years, Zac was an analytical chemist in the nuclear power industry. “Talk about SciFi comin' to life!” he says. Since 2008, he’s worked on the environmental side of things, including the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and groundwater protection. Zac specialized in corrosion control and metallurgy, which he now applies to the fine merchandise of Ziggy’s West, a business which has existed since 1987.

Creative Corner

Here's what Creative Friends of KaCSFFS are doing!

Rachael Mayo, our local dragon-drawing phenomenon, is delighted to finally be able to announce that her new coloring book Dragon Adventure is now available from Kaliedoscopia, via Amazon

"We'd been waiting on the 'look inside' feature to become available so people could see the drawings," she explained. "It's fully functional now!"

Adult coloring books are the new stress-management trend. What better book to choose, for the lover of SF and fantasy, than Rachael's intricate and gorgeous drawings? See lots more of Rachael's artwork on DeviantArt

Lawrence-based Holly Messinger's soon-to-be published novel The Curse of Jacob Tracy just received an outstanding advance review in Publisher's Weekly. This is a highly promising local writer whose novel will be published in December by Thomas Dunne Books (NOTE: before the end of 2015. Thus it is Hugo-eligible and Campbell-eligible for MidAmericon II!).

Read the review (and pre-order) with this convenient link! Or better yet, pre-order through your favorite local bookstore!

James K. Burk just signed a contract with WolfSinger Publications for his action-adventure novel The Long Way Home, first in the new Recon 9 Series. It will be published in 2016. Check Creative Corner for further updates!

Susan Satterfield would like to remind everyone that the MCC-Longview Literary Festival is this coming Friday at the Longview Campus of the Metropolitan Community College in Lee's Summit, MO.

Bryan Thomas Schmidt invites everyone to a reading and book launch for Mission: Tomorrow, inside the KU Student Union at Jayhawk Ink, 2nd Floor, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd., Lawrence, KS.

Hugo-nominated Editor Schmidt, and authors James Gunn, Robin Wayne Bailey and Chris McKitterick will be reading selections from the new Baen hard sf anthology, and signing copies.

Some KAXFEN like to exchange gifts at the meeting, but no one is required to do so.
Likewise, some like to don a holiday costume for the occasion. If you enjoy wearing costumes, please wear yours!

Last Chance!
ConQuesT Memberships go up December 31! This meeting is your last chance to buy your membership in person at the discounted rate. You also can buy them from the ConQuesT website, of course!

The Holiday Visual Feast
Townley: Inspired by a Star Formation
Artwork makes a great gift! Here's your chance to buy beautiful fantasy or space-inspired artwork directly from the artists themselves! KaCSFFS and the ConQuesT Art Show sponsor the event. Five artists have reserved space this year.

Introducing Grace Townley! Grace is a local artist whose painterly oil astronomicals caught ConQuesT Art Show Director Jan Gephardt's eye at the Art Westport show last September. This show will be her first experience with science fiction fandom, so please make her feel welcome! She brings a nice variety of her prints, reproduced from her paintings.

Mayo: Jazzdragon
We also are happy to welcome back four artists familiar to KAXFEN.
Each will bring favorite images, as well as new creations.
Stein: Bad Boys

Rachael Mayo returns with colorful and imaginative prints and originals featuring her wonderful fantasy creatures--including the ever-popular Jazzdragons--in a wide range of sizes and prices. See more of her artwork on DeviantART and Elfwood. Please note: KaCSFFS has received late word that Rachael will not be able to attend because of an unanticipated scheduling conflict.

Allison Stein frequently brings an array of her whimsical and often humorous mixed-media small originals (some watercolors, some on small canvases), prints, and bookmarks, all priced affordably. See her artwork on her Etsy store site, and on her website.

Synk: Oriental Delight
Lucy A. Synk can't be with us in person, having recently moved to Michigan (Jan Gephardt is acting as her agent). She sends longtime favorite prints and a collection of new mini-prints of recent and familiar fantasy images at affordable prices. See some of her paintings and prints on her Lucy Synk Fantasy Art website.

Gephardt: Coming Through
Jan Sherrell Gephardt also returns with her paper sculptures. She now has two limited editions of fantasy images, as well as one-of-a-kind originals. Her limited edition image Coming Through will be seen in public for the first time at the Visual Feast. See her work online at her DeviantART page, as well as in frequent features on her Artdog Observations blog.

First (Annual?) August Art Night is August 13

Bad Boys, by Allison Stein.
KaCSFFS will host the first of what may become an annual "August Art Night" event, in conjunction with its monthly meeting at The Writers Place, 3607 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO 64111. The meeting and display begin at 6:45 p.m.

Seven artists, two from outside the Kansas City metro area, will display their artwork. They are Sherri Dean, Bev Hale, Jan Sherrell Gephardt,  Signy Gephardt, Rachael Mayo, Allison Stein, and Lucy A. Synk.
Avatar 3, Bev Hale
Jazzdragon 18, by Rachael Mayo

Art media will range from original paintings and paper sculpture, through prints, to jewelry. Rachael Mayo has requested extra space so she can exhibit "some new, large-ish stuff" that she wants "to show off." Rachael was one of our top-sellers at ConQuesT, so this should be a treat!
Oriental Delight, by Lucy A. Synk

Nearly all of the artwork will be for sale, and most of the artists will be there in person.

NOTE: We cannot process charge cards at the show, so if you think you might even possibly want to buy some artwork, please bring cash and/or your checkbook!
Treetop Primaries, by Jan Sherrell Gephardt

In addition to the art display, several other things will be going on as well:
  • A short business meeting.
  • An old-time radio play program, coordinated by Robin W. Bailey.
  • Sharing of cookies brought by any members who wish to bring them (each person should bring his/her own drink and ice).
  • One last raffle to help fund the 40th Anniversary celebration, which is scheduled for next month, September 17, 2011, at the Writers Place.
  • The last chance to reserve your 40th Anniversary admission (which includes hors d'oeuvres and dessert). You may place reservations online for $11 via PayPal, or pay in person on Aug. 13, via cash or check for $10 (children ten years old or younger get in free). Either way, the deadline is Aug. 13!
  • This also is a final chance to share ideas with Diana Bailey, about names for the pair of bats, and also "the ghosts currently calling the Writers Place home." Any final name choices must be approved by the Writers Place management, and the deadline is approaching soon.
Looking Ahead to Two Events Happening Soon:
"KaCSFFS Memories" are due September 1!
Please write a short description of some of your KaCSFFS memories, and send or give them to Diana Bailey, between now and September 1. She also is looking for recipes that have been favorites at KaCSFFS meetings in the past, and artwork. Here's the format for "Memories" and recipes:
  • Typed 11-point Times New Roman
  • One page or less
  • NO LATER THAN Sept. 1, 2011
These are for a presentation on the 40th Anniversary, Sept. 17.
